5asideCHESS WINGMAN IN ACTION

Inside HMP Chelmsford

We were given the opportunity to film inside HMP Chelmsford and capture the 5asideCHESS WingMAN Programme where it actually happens.

THE STORY THAT INSPIRED WINGMAN

Harry “The Fox”, who taught John Healy chess in prison
HARRY “THE FOX”

Brighton gangster. Fellow prisoner. The man who taught John chess.

Sometimes it takes one person to get through.

John Healy's life had been shaped by alcoholism, homelessness and repeated imprisonment. During his final spell in Pentonville, fellow prisoner Harry “The Fox” patiently taught him to play chess.

But Harry gave John more than a game. He became someone John trusted. Chess became part of a remarkable change in John's life, and John went on to become an accomplished chess player and writer, including The Grass Arena and The Glass Cage.

Harry was John's WingMAN.

That relationship became the inspiration for the 5asideCHESS WingMAN Programme.

John Healy as a young man
JOHN HEALY
